GLBT Parenting Support Group
Support Group for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Parenting
Lesbian and gay families experience many of the same challenges that other families do, but they often face these challenges within the contexts of critical societal views and a lack of family and community support. GLBT families generally create their own support networks, often including other homosexual and heterosexual friends in their "extended family." This support is crucial as GLBT couples or individuals work to add children to their families.
We know that it takes a village to raise a child, but with gay parenting, it often takes a village to make one too! Whether a couple intends to adopt, use a surrogate, or complete insemination/IVF; there are multiple people involved in the process and it can be overwhelming. The utilization of group therapy and/or individual therapy can be very helpful as individuals or couples navigate the addition of children to their households.
In the GLBT Parenting Group, we will focus on:
- Creating a network of support for prospective or new GLBT parents.
- Exchanging gay friendly resources for physicians and community support.
- Discussing effective tools to cope with the ups and downs often involved in creating a family.
- Increasing fertility awareness and strategies for conception.
- Exploring issues around GLBT parenting.
- Identifying relationship struggles that often ensue as couples take on new stressors.
- Discussing changes in laws and policies for same sex couples (economic and legal rights).
- Supporting each other through this challenging and hopeful time.
Individual and couples therapy are also available by appointment.
